My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Brooke found me in one of my writing groups and asked if I’d be interested in reading and reviewing her book. As I had just finished a novel, I said yes without hesitation, especially since she mentioned it was a bit dark and included human trafficking (right up my alley). I didn’t bother checking the genre; had I known it was romance, I never would have picked it up, which would have been my loss. This book is an easy read, full of romance written exactly the right way, and I highly recommend it to any reader of romances.
The story is a pretty straight-forward love story, but the backgrounds of the characters in addition to the side plot make the romance feel fresh. The love story is well written, and very rarely corny or crude. I drop the rating down to a four for repeated use of “hissing” in the ear (sexually?!), placing “chaste” kisses multiple times when they are anything but, and – in particular – moments like this: ‘Why is she looking at me like that? Could she possibly have guessed [incredibly specific details that only that character knows].’ In addition, there was far too much, “I shouldn’t!” / “But I can’t help myself” internal dialogue.
My biggest disappointment I had with the series was that it was a series and not a one-off – I was frustrated I didn’t get to see the bad guy get his come-uppens. I might need to read the rest of the series just to find out – even if romance isn’t my thing.
