“Okay, time to put the book down and go clean your room.”
Janet looked up and narrowed her eyes. “No.”
Her mom froze. “I’m sorry?”
Setting the book down, Janet crossed her arms. “I said no.” She paused, then set her jaw and added, “I won’t do it.”
Her mom turned around. She didn’t say a word.
Janet backpedaled quickly. “I mean, um, I’m not going to do it right now? Can I finish my chapter?”
Mom took a deep breath, letting the silence weigh on her daughter. Janet grimaced.
“Yes, you can finish your chapter.”
Janet breathed out carefully.
