Devil in a Blue Dress (Easy Rawlins, #1)Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Easy Rawlins is just doing an errand for a friend of a friend and finds himself wrapped up in murder after murder, unsure of who to trust. This was a fun book and a very quick read. I absolutely loved the main character. I was immediately pulled into the world of the characters and wanted to see what happened next. This book is definitely a page-turner, and at times feels like a train wreck that you can’t look away from. I did get confused a couple of times because there were two characters with the same last name, and sometimes characters refer to each other by first name, sometimes by last name, and sometimes by nick-name, so it gets a bit confusing.

Spoilers: There were so many murders that happened so quickly, I completely lost track of one of the victims. I absolutely loved when Easy switched from doing an errand to playing detective. It was hilarious how he’d say internally, “I’m so sneaky, they’d never suspect…” and then someone immediately is suspicious. But that doesn’t stop him from thinking he’s smooth, only to be caught in his lies again and again. My favorite part is at the end, when Easy has somehow managed to survive the craziness around him, mostly due to the help of one of his friends, and he decides, “I’m so awesome at this detective stuff, I’m going to do it full time.” He has no reason to be so confident, and yet he is, which is why I love his character.

Recommended for lovers of detective novels. Race plays a huge part in this story as well. Note: First in series
