I love everything Jasper Fforde has ever written, and this book is no different. The story was compelling from the very beginning. You’re thrown into an entirely new world, and it takes a few chapters to get acclimated, but once you are there, you after completely immersed in the world. One of Fforde’s fortes is world-building. The world, its logic, and its inhabitants are so believable in Fforde’s quirky, whimsical style. Of course, Fforde’s humor is there in spades, which always makes for enjoyable reading.
Charlie is a novice in the winter consul – the police force tasked with keeping order during the winter when the majority of the world is hibernating. With her boss, she goes to explore an outer region known for lawlessness Webster there were reports of a shared dream – odd since no one really dreams anymore. Beyond that, the plot is extremely difficult to describe. There are zombie-like creatures, winter monsters, Villains, and much more.
One of the most interesting things about this story is the main character – Charlie – is never identified as male or female. Reading the back blurb, I assumed female, while my husband assumed male. I think non-binary is a reasonable conclusion as well. This provides some really interesting storytelling because you’re able to put yourself into the narrator’s shoes. At times,I reviewed different scenes swapping genders of the main character, and the story never faltered. It’s a very unique reading experience.
Highly recommended for basically anyone, especially those who enjoy immersive worlds, mysteries, urban fantasy, and humorous writing. Fantastic read.
P.S. LGTB+ friendly novel.
