Second book in series.
The Subtle Knife by Philip PullmanMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I thoroughly enjoyed the second book in the His Dark Materials trilogy. Like most middle books in a trilogy, it felt transitional and wouldn’t hold up well as a stand-alone. However, for a second book, the plot was solid and engaging, though it did take me about 60 pages to get into the story due to the shift in main characters. Once the story returned to the characters from the first book, I felt more at home and sped through the book. There were some heart-wrenching moments that, had I been a tween/teen, would have broken me for some time. As an adult, those moments were sad, but understandable. The story is well-constructed and, best of all, has high re-reability. Highly recommended for tweens/teens who are able to handle death and scary situations.
